Pichi Richi, Ikara – Flinders Ranges

Pichi Richi, Ikara – Flinders Ranges

21 – 23 April. 2868km.

Nukunu and Adnyamathanha country.

Ikara Flinders Ranges, Nukunu and Adnyamathanha country, you have our hearts. Pichi Richi and the best camp spot, the only in thousands of acres. The box gums, kangaroos, rolling ranges, cool nights, gadi (grass) tree forests, dazzling quartzite, changing colours, reverse sunsets, cool nights, campfire cooking, roasting halloumi and marshmallows. Milky Way gazing. A consummate campsite host and quintessential South Australian in Hamish, together with his quad and 8.5 month old, free ranging pups Otis and Binki. Hiking up to the ridge line, carving out our own path, merging with the Heyson track and immersing in bush enchantment on top. Views out to Devil’s Peak and the ranges on one side, and the peninsular on the other, to wind farms and far off plains. Radio-ing down to camp for regular check ins, mountain top commentary, campervan Uno scores, and perhaps some nervy ‘can you still see us’ moments! A treacherous and unchartered descent followed by well-earned 2 minute noodles!

A drive into nearby town Quorn, sun soaked and set amongst the ranges, wide, empty streets, heritage buildings all beautifully maintained. Friendly people, delicious cafe, postcard writing. An eerie atmos. The whole town a deserted movie set. From there to Warren Gorge, walks and games amongst the red rocks. Back to camp for more Pichi Richi (incidentally, named after an old railway, a section of the original Ghan route) landscapes, feasting and campfires (unfortunate by-product, a melted shoe).

Ikara – so many things we love. Reminiscences of Tjuritja, the West MacDonnells in the NT. Rich, old country.
