26 – 27 June. 16158kms.
Waramangu Country.
Another single night stop. Paid campsite. Busy with happy travellers. We bump into an old mate from the Welcome Choir, Sue the treasurer. Amazing! A solo traveler, in a sedan, with a mini one person tear drop trailer. She’s super set. Volunteering her way around the place, the Purple House in Alice Springs, making some dollars here and there.
The campsite is set on an old cattle station, reminiscent of a movie set now. A walk up the hill gives views across the highway and to working stations. We’re 500kms from Alice Springs here, and the change in the country is evident. Drier, more sparse. A quirky Indian food truck supplies us with some delicious curry puffs and we enjoy a drink by the communal fire pit, exchanging stories with fellow campers. One woman travels with her birds, chatty things. She’s eccentric and wonderful. The girls engage her in deep conversation about birds and dogs and animals, and campsites and hot spots. Tips are exchanged. We’re headed for a beautiful bush camp at Camooweel the next day, and yonder and then Gregory River it seems! Outback QLD here we come.
