Kununurra

Kununurra

5 – 6 June. 12350kms.

Miriwoong Gajerrong, Gija & Jaru Country.

Kununurra was really about refuelling and restocking, but we had lamented that by going via the Gibb we would miss Purnululu and the Bungle Bungles – a bucket list location on the lands of the Gija and Jaru peoples. So…. we splurged and got a scenic flight to see it from the air! Absolutely spectacular to see a birds-eye view of the Sandalwood and Kensington pride mango orchards of Kununurra, the vast inland sea that is Lake Argyle, created by the damming of the Ord River in the 70s, expansive cattle stations, and just so much beautiful, rolling country, incredible pristine ranges, earth lifted where tectonic plates had shifted, publicly inaccessible, seeming endless beauty. The Bungle Bungles themselves, a sight to behold, our pilot flew us down close to view these beehive formations and their cathedral gorges, spots where lightning had struck, and earth had cracked. We could only imagine what it must be like to be down there, like ants in the rock crevices, sheltering in caves and splashing in waterholes. Time to turn back, we see an isolated rain shower in the distance. Somehow, despite rigorous wake up attempts, Talia has slept through the whole thing – quite the spiritual experience!
